I took my nieces there this week (late Feb of 2010) and just to warn you: it's near dead.
You know in the movies where the whole plot is based on this build up of a great event and you're so pumped to see the end result and when the characters finally reach their goal after all the troubles they went through and they've got the triumphant music going on, they walk through the gates... and you hear that music record scratch? Yeah, kinda like that.
I was SO disappointed!! I don't know if it was just the season or if it is like that all together buuuuut... I mean my sister and I remember going there and I fell in love with Ft. Sam Houston's Quadrangle. The lush grass to play on, all the deer and geese, peacocks... I remember it being so beautiful. And I thought what better way to introduce wildlife to my 1 and 2 year old nieces than feeding the deer! Didn't quite happen.
Maybe they're just opening back up from 9/11. They did shut it down when that happened after all. We're going to try to go back in the summer and see what happens. Hopefully it will be better. That place is really beautiful when it's alive..
